Communications over Iridium not affected by satellite collission.
Tuesday February 10, 2009, Iridium lost one of its 66 satellites. The
loss is the result of a collision with a non-operational Russian
satellite. This was a completely random and isolated event, and
although this event has a relatively limited impact on the Iridium
services, immediate action are taken to remedy the damage.
The Iridium constellation is uniquely designed to withstand a loss of
an operational satellite and Iridium is taking the necessary steps to
replace the lost satellite with one of its spare satellites in orbit
which is expected to take approximately 30 days.
Iridium users may experience short interruptions for a few days until
Iridium can redirect the traffic which is expected to be completed on
Friday February 13.
